Tip: The more ripe a banana is, the sweeter it will be. If your bananas are very ripe, you may not want to add honey to your banana orange smoothie.

    📖 Variations

The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the recipe has been tested. However, the next time you make our orange banana smoothie recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

    • If you prefer, substitute orange juice in place of the milk.
    • Instead of honey, you could also use agave nectar or maple syrup.
    • Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder - vanilla protein powder is my favorite.
    • A teaspoon of fresh ginger (or 2 teaspoons of ground ginger) is a great addition to this smoothie recipe.
    • Add a tablespoon or two of chia seeds or flax seeds.
    • If you use all frozen fruit you can omit the ice.
    • Cara cara oranges are my favorites if you're using fresh oranges, but you could also use blood oranges. In a pinch, you can also substitute clementines or mandarins.
    • While yellow bananas are the most common, strawberry bananas are great for smoothies, too. They're smaller than regular bananas with reddish skin and taste like strawberries and bananas mixed together.
    • If you're not using vanilla yogurt but still want that orange creamsicle flavor, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

To make a smoothie bowl instead, reduce the milk by half but follow the rest of the instructions.

Pour the smoothie mixture into a bowl and top it with your favorite nuts or seeds, and additional fresh fruit like blueberries or raspberries.
