Fall is my favorite season for so many reasons... the kids go back to school, the weather starts to cool off, my birthday is in October, and the leaves start to turn beautiful colors.

Here in New England, this is apple season. Last weekend, Mr. Juggling Act and I took the kids to pick apples. Ethan is all about finding THE most PERFECT apple, while Olivia wants to eat each one she picks.

We quickly filled our 1 peck bag with Spencer and Cortland apples while we talked about what to make. Olivia wanted to make apple pie - immediately.  Mumma just didn't have the energy to make pies Sunday afternoon, so we enjoyed tasty healthy Apple Pie Smoothies instead.

If you love this one, and want something more seasonal for winter, try my Pineapple Cranberry Smoothie as well. My kids love it.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about this Apple Pie Smoothies recipe.

Which apple is best for smoothies?

Pretty much any type of apple works for a smoothie. You can use a Granny Smith for a tart flavor. For a sweeter flavor, try Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji apples.

What makes an apple smoothie taste like apple pie?

It's got all the flavors you expect from a classic pie thanks to my homemade apple pie spice mix, and the steel cut oats make this a hearty smoothie. Oh, and I just love the creaminess the vanilla yogurt adds. This is a must-make recipe for Fall!

Do I peel apples for smoothies?

If you keep the skin on, you'll include more of the nutrients from the apple. However, either way works just fine. It is totally a personal preference.

What is in homemade apple pie spice mix?

I'm glad you asked! I created the BEST homemade apple pie spice mix. You can put this in pancakes, waffles, and smoothies or smoothie bowls. Check out our homemade apple pie spice mix recipe. Ingredients include cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, and cardamom. This is what gives the smoothie that classic apple pie flavor.

    Which apple is healthiest?

A recent study found that in addition to organic apples, the healthiest apple varieties are Pink Lady (my personal favorite!), Red Delicious and Granny Smith.

    📖 Variations

We recommend that you follow our exact recipe the first time since we have tested this recipe several times. Next time you make it, (if you really want to get creative), you can try adding strawberries, peanut butter, or a banana to your smoothie.

Here are a couple of different ways to make the smoothie:

    • To make a frozen smoothie, add 5 ice cubes to the smoothie mixture, or use frozen apples or even a frozen banana.
    • Instead of vanilla yogurt, try plain Greek yogurt.
    • To make this an apple pie protein smoothie, you can add your favorite vanilla protein powder or even a couple of tablespoons of almond butter or cashew butter.
    • Chia seeds are also a good idea if you're looking to add more health benefits.
    • You could even crumble some gingersnap cookies over the top for a somewhat healthy dessert!

    Storage

Smoothies are almost always enjoyed immediately, however, any leftover smoothie mixture can be frozen in an ice cube tray. Transfer the cubes to a resealable freezer bag and label. You can also pour it into an ice pop mold for healthy smoothie popsicles.
