Not to be redundant, but when it comes to smoothies, I like mine smooth.  This Avocado and Banana Smoothie is exactly that - smooth and creamy.  The combination of fresh ripe avocado and banana with vanilla yogurt and local honey is so, so delicious.

Trust me, you're going to want to make this again and again.  It's just that good!  Trust me (the green vegetable hater) that this is a green smoothie you can really love, but if you prefer something more berry flavored, try this recipe for the Best Blueberry Smoothie you'll ever taste!

    Ingredients

    • avocado
    • banana
    • milk (cow, soy, almond)
    • vanilla yogurt
    • local honey

    Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions readers sometimes ask about our Avocado and Banana Smoothie recipe.

    Why use local honey?

Did you know that using local honey can actually help fight seasonal allergies? This is a great way to support your body AND small local farms. You can find local honey at your farmer's market, specialty stores, and online.

What fruit goes well with avocado?

Avocado is delicious with bananas, pineapple, and berries. It also is yummy with leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach. (You might like to check out our Spinach and Strawberry Salad with chicken and avocado!)

    Are bananas good for you?

Bananas are a source of vitamin B6 fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C and are endorsed by the American Medical Association as a health food.

    Are avocados good for you?

Avocados add a lot of nutritional value to your diet. They are a great source of:
    Omega-3
    dietary fiber
    vitamins B6, C, E, and K
    potassium

Avocados are also a great source of folate, which is important for pregnant and nursing mamas. Read more about the health benefits of avocado. If you love avocados, you might like to check out these other recipes:

The key to making restaurant-quality guacamole at home is using fresh ingredients. This is the perfect compliment to tacos, quesadillas, and burritos - or just with a bowl of tortilla chips!

How do you cut an avocado?

    1. Cut the avocado in half: slice through until the knife hits the pit. Keeping the knife steady, carefully rotate the avocado. Do this on a cutting board. Twist the two halves apart.
    2. Remove the pit: Whack the knife into the pit and twist to remove the pit.
    3. Scoop out the flesh: I like to use this handy little avocado slider (shown below) to scoop out the flesh and slice it at the same time. You can also use a spoon. Run the spoon around to loosen the skin and scoop it out whole.

    Avocado and Banana Smoothie Variations

While we haven't tested these variations, here are some ideas you might consider:

    • Add a half cup of spinach or kale to your smoothie to boost your fiber and vitamin A intake.
    • 1 cup of berries adds even more vitamins and minerals with blackberries, cranberries, and blueberries having the most antioxidants.
    • For a more frozen consistency, peel and freeze your banana and place it in an airtight container or freezer bag and freeze overnight.

I also really like adding a scoop of greens to my smoothies, like this Superfruit Blend from Barlean's.
