      Ang's Tips

The citrus juice helps keep the apples from turning brown so be sure to use an orange, lemon, or lime.

      Storage

To Store: Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. It will only keep a day or so. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)

      Variations

The first time you try any new recipe, we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the delicious recipe has been tested. However, the next time you make our recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

You can also make this without cinnamon sugar and add red onion, jalapeño pepper or bell peppers, and fresh cilantro instead. Savory apple salsa is delicious with pork chops or pork tenderloin.

      Instructions

      For the salsa:

      • Mix together granny smith apples, pears, orange zest, and orange juice in a small bowl.
3 medium Granny Smith apples, 2 medium Barlett pears, 1 orange, 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
      • Stir in the brown sugar and jelly (or jam).
        2 tablespoons apple jelly
      • Cover the mixture and put in the fridge until ready to serve.

      For the chips:

      • Preheat the oven to 400F degrees.
      • Prepare two large-rimmed baking sheets with parchment paper.
      • In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon until blended.
2 tablespoons brown sugar, ¼ cup sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
      • Brush each tortilla with water, and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture.
10 flour tortillas, 1 to 2 tablespoons water
      • Cut the tortillas into wedges to make tortilla chips, and place the wedges in a single layer on the baking sheets.
      • Bake for 6-8 minutes or until brown and crispy.
      • Allow them to cool on the baking sheets before serving.

      Equipment

      • Cutting Board
      • Paring Knife
      • Mixing Bowls
      • Measuring Spoons
      • Microplane

      Notes

Notes: Choose the flavor of jelly or jam based on your individual preference. The salsa is best served within 24 hours as the apples and pears will begin to discolor. The orange juice helps preserve the color for a short time. The chips will continue to crisp slightly as they cool. For crispier chips, use nonstick cooking spray instead of water and reduce the cooking time.

To make a savory apple salsa, omit the cinnamon and sugar. Add red onion, jalapeno pepper or bell peppers, and fresh cilantro instead. Savory apple salsa is delicious with pork chops or pork tenderloin.
