I'll be the first to admit that I think my kids eating healthy is a priority, but that in actuality convenience sometimes trumps that.  Yogurt pouches and Healthy Homemade Granola Bars are healthy enough, but we're not always hitting the recommended number of fruits and veggies.

However, finding a way to keep track of healthy eating for the kids just got a little easier though with this Fruit and Vegetable checklist. It's a free printable for you to download.

How to Get Kids to Eat Healthier

Remember that kids learn from watching other people around them so make sure you're eating healthy, too! Here are a few ways to get more fruits and veggies into your kids.

    Smoothies

This one seems pretty obvious, right? Throw in a whole bunch of fruits and veggies and you're good to go! You can even make smoothies into freeze pops. Instant Healthy Dessert!

    Smoothie Bowls

These make a great breakfast or afterschool snack. Make up a thicker version of your favorite smoothie and pour it into a bowl. Add additional fruit and other toppings for a healthy snack.

    Granola Bars

Dried fruits are a good way to sneak in a bit more nutrition. Homemade granola bars can be packed loads of good stuff like nuts for protein and dried fruit that kids might not otherwise eat alone. Dried blueberries, cranberries, raisins, and even apricots, figs and plums are great additions to granola bars.

    Feeding Challenges & Motivation

We have struggled for a long time with Ethan's 'feeding' as the doctors call it.  We've done 'food therapy' where we've worked to try new foods and desensitize him to different textures.  Getting him to eat 5 fruits and veggies and day is definitely a huge challenge.

For Olivia, it's a breeze.  We keep strawberries, watermelon and cucumbers cut up in the fridge in small containers and she frequently will help herself to one of these snacks.

For Ethan though, we've had to make it more of a game, and reward him for eating the foods he'll tolerate, but doesn't love, like bananas and pears.  This chart works to both keep us focused on his healthy eating, as well as motivating him to 'eat the rainbow.'  Weekly rewards - a small toy, new toothbrush or a new book - go a long way to making this more successful.

    Printer Recommendation

I have used Canon printers for many years, and now really like the Pixma series, which work wonderfully!

    Tips for Printing

    • Select the highest print quality under your printer settings.
    • I suggest printing on cardstock so that your checklist will last without rips or tears.
    • Check that the printer is not running low on ink.
    • These printables use a lot of ink so take care removing them from the printer so as not to smudge them.
