Texas Trash Pie is this amazing dessert packed with a mix of chocolate chips, pretzels, caramel, chopped nuts, and coconut, – basically all the good stuff thrown together. Traditionally this recipe also includes broken pieces of graham crackers but I've omitted them in my version.
While some have compared this to a mashup of pie and a candy bar, Texas trash pie reminds me a little bit of magic bars. Both recipes use sweetened condensed milk to tie the whole delicious mess into something you can slice and eat!

💭 Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about this delicious pie recipe.
The Royer family, owners of the Royers Round Top Cafe in Round Top, Texas created the pie in 1987. While Pecan Pie may be the official pie of Texas,
Place the pie dough into the pie dish and flute the edges as desired.
Next, place a piece of parchment paper on top of the crust and fill it two-thirds of the way full with pie weights.
If you don't have pie weights, you can use dry beans rice, uncooked rice, or even granulated sugar.
This pie can sit on the countertop for up to 3 days, although I most often refrigerate it from the start.
⭐ Ang's Tips
✔️ You may be tempted to slice the pie early, but resist you must! Trust me, cutting it before it has a chance to fully set up will result in a mess.
✔️ If you decide to swap out some of the filling ingredients, be sure it's measure-for-measure. For example 1 cup of walnuts for 1 cup of pecans.

🍲 Storage
To Store: Leftover Texas trash pie can be stored at room temperature for 3 days. Alternatively, you can store it in the fridge for 1 week.
Be sure to wrap it well or transfer it to an airtight container for best results.(These are my favorite airtight containers.)
To Freeze: Wrap the cooled pie in plastic wrap, then a layer of aluminum foil. Finally, slide the pie into a 2-gallon freezer bag. Remove as much air as possible and seal tightly. Don't forget to label it!
To Thaw: Transfer the pie from the freezer to the fridge and let thaw for 24 hours.
✏️ Make Ahead
This dessert is perfect for holidays because you can make it a day or two ahead of time. See the storage information above for details on how to keep it until you're ready to serve it to your friends and family.
📖 Variations
The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the delicious recipe has been tested. However, the next time you make our Texas trash pie recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:
Make this recipe your own by substituting the caramel bits for butterscotch chips. You can also use dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet chocolate.
Instead of pecans, you can use walnuts. While you won't get quite the same texture, you could also use almonds or cashews.
While the original recipe uses buttery flakey pie crust, you could use a graham cracker crust instead, which more closely mimics magic bars.
I adore toasted coconut, which you can substitute for the flaked coconut if you like.

🍴 Serving Suggestions
I love Texas trash pie with a scoop of ice cream on top. While vanilla ice cream is probably the most common, I find it's really good with coffee ice cream, too.
You could also serve it with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce for a truly over-the-top dessert.
