Every year, I made lots of different homemade bath and beauty gifts for my family and friends. I love coming up with new texture and scent combinations.  This peppermint sugar scrub is a classic. It's a must-have for the holidays! And, it couldn't be easier.

The cold New England weather is so harsh on our skin. From chapped lips to dry skin, the struggle is real! I've got the perfect solution for you - Peppermint Scrub.

Here's what you do, make a batch for you, and one for a friend.  It makes the perfect stocking stuffer!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions that readers have asked about making this homemade peppermint sugar scrub recipe.

What does peppermint sugar scrub do?

Sugar scrubs are excellent for exfoliating your skin, while the coconut oil helps to hydrate and smooth. Peppermint essential oils are wonderful for tired muscles, and I especially love using this on my feet.

What is peppermint essential oil good for?

I highly recommend using peppermint essential oil to help with muscle aches and pains.

Can I use peppermint extract instead of essential oil?

Yes, you can substitute peppermint extract, however, it does not have the same properties as the essential oil.

How long to sugar scrubs last?

Because homemade sugar scrubs have no preservatives, they have a shorter shelf life than store-bought products. This peppermint scrub will last 3-4 weeks. Be sure to keep the lid on and store in a cool, dry spot.

Essential oils are highly concentrated so is important to only use a few drops.

    Instructions

Make this quick, easy, and festive homemade Peppermint Sugar Scrub recipe with a few simple ingredients like sugar and essential oils - perfect for DIY gift or stocking stuffer.

    1. In a bowl, combine the coconut oil and sugar.
    2. Add the peppermint oil and mix well.
    3. In a small bowl, transfer about ⅓ of the sugar scrub and combine it with the food coloring. Mix well.
    4. In a jar, start by layering the uncolored sugar scrub on the bottom of the jar, add the colored sugar scrub, and then top with the last bit of scrub.
    5. Keep at room temperature in an airtight container.

TIP: You can also mix this homemade sugar scrub up in your stand mixer, or using a hand mixer. I like this method also, as the sugar scrub gets really well combined that way.

I love the way the red and white look together - just like striped candy canes! You could also make this a peppermint swirl sugar scrub by placing the jar at an angle while filling it. Add a thinner layers and gently swirl as you go.

    Variations

If you don't care for peppermint, you could swap out another scent, such as lavender or lemongrass. Different oils are good for different things; for example, peppermint is alerting while lavender is calming.

Of course, changing the pigmentation is as easy as changing the food coloring also.

Instead of coconut oil, you can use almond oil or even olive oil.

    DIY Gift Ideas

I love making my own gifts during the holiday season and it's so much fun to do it with the kids.

Making your own sugar scrub, bath salts, or make up remover pads is the perfect way to say thank you to teachers, too! If you're not really into this candy cane scrub, try one of these other 'recipes' instead.

This easy homemade Gingerbread Sugar Scrub works as an exfoliant to get rid of dead skin cells and moisturizer for your dry skin.

Place your scrub in a cute glass jar and add a ribbon or baker's twine for the perfect gift.

How to Use a Sugar Scrub

I use it in the shower. Similar to a salt scrub, the white sugar acts like an exfoliant to buff away dead cells and polishes your skin. The coconut oil really helps moisturize, too!

This is perfect during the winter months (especially in the Northeast!) because this time of year the cold dry weather wreaks havoc on your skin.

Wet your skin then work the sugar scrub into your skin using a circular motion, then rinse.
