    ⏲️ Storage

To Store: Add your fully cooled soup to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)

To Reheat: Add your chilled sweet potato soup to the stovetop on a gentle heat with a splash of water or chicken broth/vegetable stock in the event that the soup has thickened during storage, till heated throughout. You can also reheat stored soup in the microwave on high heat while stirring at frequent intervals.

To Freeze: Once fully cooled, transfer the sweet potato soup to a freezer-safe container or Ziploc bag and store for up to 3-6 months, although I usually consume stored soup within 3 months. (For freezing, I love these containers.)

To Thaw: Allow the frozen soup to thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then reheat as directed above. You could also submerge your frozen bag of soup in hot water to quicken the defrosting process although I don’t recommend doing so if you opted to include heavy cream as an ingredient.

    ⭐ Tips

Frozen sweet potatoes work great for this recipe and will save you loads of time.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) people often as about making this creamy sweet potato soup recipe:

What is the difference between sweet potatoes and yams?

While many may assume that sweet potatoes and yams are the same, they are in fact different root vegetables.

Sweet potatoes are softer in texture once cooked, naturally sweet in flavor, and have a reddish to brown skin with orange, white, or purple flesh (depending on the variety of sweet potatoes). Yams have a rougher texture, a neutral flavor, and brown skin with pale and starchy flesh - much like a regular potato.

Sweet potatoes originated in South or Central America while yams originated in Africa and are less likely to be found in US stores (although sweet potatoes in stores are often erroneously referred to as yams!).

How can I thicken my sweet potato soup?

If your soup is a little runny or thin for your liking, simply add a small amount of starch (such as flour) to your soup until you achieve the thickness desired.

It’s best to first mix 1 tablespoon of flour or thicken of your choice to a separate bowl with chicken broth/vegetable stock to form a paste that can then be whisked into the sweet potato soup so that you don’t have any starchy clumps. This also helps dissolve the thickener in the soup more evenly.

Can I substitute yams for sweet potatoes in soup?

Technically, yes you could, although you’re going to end up with an entirely different tasting soup which will also develop a thicker, more starch-like consistency.

You have to keep in mind that yams and sweet potatoes are different root vegetables with different flavors, textures, and starch content. If you’re going to use yams in place of sweet potatoes when it comes to making this soup then you’ll definitely need to make provision for this by adding ingredients such as sugar and increasing your liquid so that you don’t end up with an overly thick soup.

If you’re looking for a good substitute with similar properties to a sweet potato then rather opt for something like Garnet potatoes which come the closest in taste and texture to sweet potato.

Do you need to peel sweet potatoes?

The skins of sweet potatoes contain a lot of nutrients that are safe to eat. Because this soup is pureed, you do not need to peel the sweet potatoes before adding them to the pan.

    📖 Variations

We recommend that you try our healthy sweet potato soup for the first time just as it is written for the best results. It's a good idea because that is how the recipe has been tested.

However, the next time you make it, you might consider one of these different ways of making this great recipe:

    • Garlic, ginger, rosemary, curry powder, allspice, cinnamon, coriander, thyme, and cloves all go well with sweet potatoes. I really like chives or tarragon when serving this yummy soup.
    • Consider adding a bit of spice like smoked paprika, chili powder, cayenne pepper or a pinch of red pepper flakes to your soup for additional flavor.
    • Cook ½ cup of chopped leek with the carrots, celery, and onion for leek sweet potato soup.
    • If you like, you could even add shredded rotisserie chicken or leftover pulled pork to this creamy soup to make it a hearty meal.
    • Use half the sweet potato called for in the original recipe and pumpkin puree or butternut squash for the other half for a fantastic pumpkin sweet potato soup or butternut squash sweet potato soup.

    🍴 Serving Suggestions

Serve this soup with some crusty bread or a side salad for a healthy meal. You can add pumpkin seeds or chopped walnuts for a little added crunch. For some tang, add a little bit of Greek Yogurt to the soup just before serving.

Top with shredded cheese and bacon crumbles... or better yet, add a little pile of Cheesy Tater Tots with bacon!

This soup is divine with homemade sweet potato rolls, too.
