Is there anything more delicious than a good steak cooked on an outdoor grill?

This sirloin steak recipe combines two of my favorite ingredients - Cowboy Steak Butter and Cowboy Steak Rub. The result is an incredibly flavorful and mouthwateringly juicy grilled sirloin steak that people will rave about.

Seriously, people are going to beg to know how you made this steak recipe!

Of course, if you're not a fan of a sweet and smoky rub, you can try one of our other seasoning mixes instead. Lemon Pepper Seasoning or Italian Seasoning are both delicious on steak. You could also skip the rub and use this Easy Steak Marinade instead.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about this sirloin steak recipe.

Is top sirloin a good steak?

Top sirloin is the perfect steak for grilling because it has good marbling. Like skirt steak and flank steak, it is a lean cut of meat, however, top sirloin is more tender than both, and also more tender than bottom sirloin.
While it may sound a little silly, top sirloin has a great beefy flavor. It's also popular because it is much less expensive than filet mignon.

    What is Cowboy Steak Rub?

This seasoning mix is a yummy combination of smoky, spicy, and sweet notes that add robust flavor, especially on red meat.
With a blend of cumin and coriander, along with simple ingredients like brown sugar, black pepper, chili powder, and paprika, it's a super tasty rub for pork and chicken also.

    What is Cowboy Butter?

This is an herbed compound butter that starts with room temperature unsalted butter, mixed with minced garlic, lemon, and a bit of red pepper flake.
Compound butter, also known as finishing butter, is often used on grilled meats to help enhance the flavor.

    🧂 Ingredients

This is meant to be a brief overview of the Grilled Top Sirloin Steak recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below.

    • Top Sirloin
    • Worcestershire sauce
    • Olive Oil
    • Worcestershire Sauce
    • Garlic Powder
    • Cowboy Steak Rub
    • Cowboy Butter (optional)

    🔪 Instructions

    Marinating the Steak

Using the cowboy rub makes this a special marinade and the outcome is the most amazingly flavorful steaks!

    1. Gently pat the steaks dry with paper towels and place them into a baking dish.
    2. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and coyboy steak rub.
    3. Sour the marinade over the meat, taking care to cover all sides.
    4. Cover and refridgerate for at least 30 minutes, and up to 24 hours.

    Grilling the Steak

    1. Remove the steaks from the fridge and let set on the counter to rest for 20-30 minutes.
    2. Preheat the grill to high (about 350°F — 400°F).
    3. Lightly spray the grill with non-stick cooking spray.
    4. Place steaks onto the hot grill. For a good sear, do not move for 4-5 minutes.
    5. Then, flip the steaks and cook on the second side.
    6. Check the internal temperature and remove at your desired doneness (see below).
    7. Place the cooked steaks into a shallow dish and add a tablespoon of cowboy butter to each.
    8. Lightly cover with aluminum foil and allow to rest for 5-10 minutes.
Top sirloin is one of my favorite cuts of steak!

    Grilled Steak Cooking Guide

For the best results, always check the internal temperature of the steaks. Obviously, thicker cuts will take longer to cook than a thinner steak.

    Here is a helpful guide:

    • Medium-Rare: 130 to 135 degrees F; cook for 3-5 minutes after flipping
    • Medium: 135 to 140 degrees F; cook for 5-7 minutes after flipping
    • Medium-Well: 140 to 150 degrees F; cook for 8-10 minutes after flipping

When you use an internal meat thermometer, you will always have excellent results!

    ⭐ Tips

✔️ Always check the internal temperature of your steak! This is my favorite meat thermometer. Never rely on time alone for your desired doneness.

✔️ Rest the meat for 5-10 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat. This makes for a more flavorful and juicy steak.

✔️ Cut the sirloin steak at a 45-degree angle against the grain for the most tender steak.

    🍲 Storage

To Store: Store leftover sirloin steak in an airtight container for 3-5 days.

To Reheat: Add a little butter to a hot skillet and place the sliced beef into it. Toss the beef with the melted butter. Cover and remove from the heat. This will help the meat warm through without drying it out. Check it after about 5 minutes.

To Freeze: Frozen steak will last in the freezer for quite a long time but is best when eaten within 3 months.

To Thaw: Allow to thaw overnight in the fridge.

(These are my favorite airtight containers.)

    📖 Variations

The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the Grilled Top Sirloin Steak has been tested. However, the next time you make our recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

    • Use a little bit of soy sauce instead of Worcestersire sauce.
    • Instead of non-stick cooking spray, brush a small amount of olive oil onto the grill grates using a basting brush safe for high heat.
    • Swap out the Cowboy Steak Rub for another seasoning of your choice such as Taco Seasoning, Magic Dust Rub, or even Ranch Seasoning Mix.
