Our pork rub seasoning is a mix of sweet and spicy. Our homemade seasoning mix perfectly compliments pork, however, it can also be used for chicken, too.

    ❤️Why You'll Love Our Recipe

    • When you create your own seasoning mixes, you can control exactly what you have in the blend. That means that this recipe is naturally gluten-free, too.
    • Plus, you can customize it to your taste. If you prefer it a little less spicy, you can adjust the amount of cayenne pepper or chili powder.

    Ingredients

These seasonings and spices create a really amazing flavor combination that's so delicious on pork.

    • brown sugar
    • paprika
    • chili powder
    • granulated garlic or garlic powder
    • onion powder
    • cayenne pepper
    • ground mustard
    • Himalayan OR Kosher salt
    • coarse black pepper

Scroll down to the teal box with the recipe card for the full recipe.

This pork rub recipe takes just a couple of minutes to put together.

    Instructions

Here's how to make the best pork rub seasoning:

    1. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients.
    2. Gently mix the seasonings with a fork or whisk.
    3. Use a funnel to put the pork seasoning into a mason jar.

    Ang's Tips

    • I prefer dark brown sugar, but light brown sugar will also work.
    • Pink Himalayan salt is my first choice but you can also use kosher salt.
    • Use a fork to break up any clumps as you gently mix the spices together.

This spice blend is delicious on many different cuts of pork including pork shoulder and pork roast.
Spoonful of seasoning mix hovering over a jar funnel.
This pork chop seasoning is great on chicken, too!

How long will this pork rub keep?

Properly sealed, this mixture will last 6-8 weeks. I like to keep my homemade spice rub in a mason jar or other airtight container.

    My Favorite Pork Recipes

From Sheet Pan Pork Tenderloin to Slow Cooker Pulled Pork, I really love making pork for my family. (When I see it on sale, I always grab an extra package or two for the freezer).

Pork is mouthwateringly juicy and takes on the flavors of the seasonings you add to it. Here are some of the pork recipes my family, and my readers, love:

    • Asian Pork Kabobs - amazing on the grill
    • Instant Pot Pork Tenderloin - with potatoes
    • Barbecue Pork Ribs - uses this seasoning mix
    • Grilled BBQ Pork Chops - with strawberry peach BBQ sauce
    • Balsamic Pork Loin - simple instant pot recipe
    • Boneless Pork Chops - with pineapple bourbon BBQ sauce
    • Dutch Oven Pork Tenderloin - easy recipe
    • Spoon drizzling glaze over Sheet Pan Pork Tenderloin.
    • Pulled Pork Lettuce Wraps with peppers, cabbage, and cashews on a plate.

This delicious blend contains garlic, brown sugar, paprika, chili powder, and other seasonings for the perfect spice mix.

How do you use this rub?

Use about 2 tablespoons of this homemade pork rub seasoning mix per pound of meat such as pork rubs, pork butt, chicken breast, or chicken thighs.

For best results, massage the mix into the meat and let it marinate for 30 minutes before cooking. I love this mixture on grilled pork ribs, but it's delicious on chicken, like wings, thighs, and breasts as well. This is delicious on all kinds of pork including pork loin, tenderloin, and pork butt cooked on the grill, stovetop, smoker, or even slow cooker. It also makes a great bbq rub for beef brisket.

    Recipe Variations

As I mentioned, one of the best things about making your own spice mixtures is that you can control all the flavors to make your own perfect blend. Here are some ways to make this recipe your own:

    • For a bolder smoky flavor, add a little ground cumin.
    • Add additional heat with red pepper flakes or chipotle powder.
    • I prefer dark brown sugar, but light brown sugar will also work.
