This Grilled Ribeye recipe is the perfect steak with excellent marbling for maximum flavor, seasoned just right with salt and pepper, and then seared. With the added topping of this savory seasoned butter, this truly is the best ribeye you'll ever taste.

This might be my favorite steak because this cut of meat has just enough fat to be truly mouth-watering! With a really good sear on both sides of the steak and our Cowboy Steak Butter, this will become your favorite cut of steak, too!

Adding a little bit of garlic butter to the top of the steak while it rests is a great way to add more flavor!

    🧂 Ingredients

    • Cowboy Butter (salted butter, fresh parsley, red pepper flakes, black pepper, fresh garlic, lemon juice and zest)
    • 1-inch boneless rib eye steaks
    • coarse salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
    • Olive Oil
    • Worcestershire sauce (optional)

This is meant to be a brief overview of the best way to cook juicy steak on a gas grill. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable ribeye steak recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below.

Ingredients for the best grilled ribeye with cowboy butter - ribeye steaks, cowboy butter.

    🔪Instructions

    1. First, remove rib-eye steak from the fridge and let rest on the counter for about 1 hour before grilling.
    2. Once the steaks are at room temperature, preheat the grill to medium high, or about 500-degrees F. For most gas grills, it will take about 10 minutes to fully come up to temperature.
    3. Lightly brush both sides of the steaks with a little olive oil.
    4. Season steaks with coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper.
    5. Place steaks on the grill. If you like, you can add a little bit of Worcestershire sauce (optional).
    6. Then add 1 tablespoon of Cowboy Butter (or other compound butter).
    7. Sear the outside of the steaks for about 90 seconds, then flip and repeat on the other side.
    8. Now, turn the grill down to medium heat.
    9. Cook to your desired temperature (see below for times and temps). The total time depends on this.
    10. Tranfer steak to a cutting board and add another thick pat of butter to the top.
    11. Use foil to tent the steaks and allow them to rest for at least 3 minutes, up to 10 minutes.

For the best grilled ribeye steaks, season generously and add Cowboy Butter!

How long to cook ribeye steak on grill

Beef should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F according to FoodSafety.gov, which is the temperature for "medium" doneness. My husband likes a medium-rare steak while I prefer medium to medium-well. Figuring out the final temperature can be tricky. Here are some helpful tips:

    • 135°F for rare - cook for about 3-5 minutes per side
    • 140°F for medium rare - cook for about 4-6 minutes per side
    • 145°F for medium- cook for about 5-7 minutes per side
    • 150°F for medium well - cook for about 6-8 minutes per side

For thicker steaks, you may need a tad longer than these estimates.

🌡️ While it's not mandatory to have a fancy-schmancy grill probe, it really is a good idea! Personally, I love this Bluetooth Instant Read Thermometer. A digital meat thermometer really does ensure that my steaks are cooked the right amount of time.

    ⭐ Tips

Follow these simple steps for the perfect ribeye steak every time:

✔️ For best results, always make sure your grill grates are clean. Brush the grates with olive oil and be sure to start with a hot grill before adding your ribeye steaks.

✔️Lightly pat your steaks dry with a paper towel. That will help you to get a good sear.

✔️ Remember you always want to allow your beef to rest for at least 3-5 minutes, longer for thick ribeye. I recommend adding the butter than making a tinfoil tent for your steaks and allow them to rest for 10 minutes.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions (and answers!) about grilling rib eye steak.

Why would you put butter on steak?

Not only does butter add fat and richness, but it can also make for a more tender steak. Cowboy Butter is good on just about any cut of beef. It adds so much additional flavor and makes for really delicious steaks.

Is ribeye a good grilling steak?

Ribeye steaks are awesome for grilling because of the great marbling. These are thick steaks similar to filet mignon (but bigger) that are impressive for company and special occasions.

    📖 Variations

If you prefer not to use the Cowboy Butter (or don't have those ingredients on hand), try one of our other compound butter recipes:

    • Simple Dill Compound Butter
    • Tomato Basil Compound Butter

Prefer even more flavor? Try our Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce. Our slightly smoky Cowboy Steak Rub or Sweet & Spicy Barbecue Sauce are also great choices! Hi Michelle! You can absolutely cook a ribeye steak in a skillet. Heat a couple of tablespoons of olive oil in your skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak to the skillet and sear it on both sides for 5 minutes. Check the internal temperature and cook longer accordingly. Enjoy!
