They'll work just as well as real eggs, and you can reuse them next year!

Materials to Tie Dye Eggs

white hard boiled eggs
food coloring
coffee filters
twist ties
spray bottle with water

Plastic gloves are optional, but I highly recommend them since the food coloring and dyeing process can be quite messy!

Do Easter Eggs dye better warm or cold?

The temperature of the eggs doesn't matter for dying them - although I'd recommend letting them cool so that they're easier to handle. However, make sure you are starting with DRY hard-boiled eggs because extra moisture can mess up the dyeing process.

Is it okay to dye cracked eggs?

I do not recommend eating any cracked eggs that have been dyed because bacteria can get into those cracks and make you sick. However, in terms of decorating only, it is fine to use cracked eggs.

How to Tie Dye Easter Eggs

It is very important that you start with DRY, hard boiled eggs that are cooled completely.

Wrap each egg in a coffee filter and twist tie to close.
Add the eggs to each cup and let sit for 5 minutes.
Remove and set on paper towels.
Place drops of food coloring directly on the eggs. Be sure to leave white spaces as well. Continue until the filters are covered with spots.
Gently spray each dot with the water bottle. The food coloring will spread and mix with the other colors.
Squeeze out the extra water and place on a sheet pan to dry overnight.
Unwrap the eggs from the dried coffee filters.
