Before I had kids (when I had loads of disposable income) I used to purchase my favorite Mediterranean spice blend online. There are lots of different varieties out there, but often these store-bought blends are expensive.

Then I realized how EASY it is to make this and now I have a new favorite spice blend, and I can make it right in my own kitchen!

To save money, I like to purchase my herbs and spices in bulk. Here are some of my favorite items to use when making seasoning mixes - including jars.

❤️ Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Versatile blend that can be used in dozens of ways.
    • No weird ingredients you can't pronounce!
    • Less expensive than store-bought varieties.

    🧂 Ingredients

This recipe will yield about ⅔ cup of homemade Mediterranean seasoning.

    • basil
    • oregano
    • sea salt
    • parsley
    • onion powder
    • rosemary
    • black pepper
    • thyme

Note: some blends have a little bit of cinnamon in them as well, which is commonly used in savory dishes in the Mediterranean region.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about Mediterranean spices and this recipe.

What does Mediterranean seasoning taste like?

This seasoning blend is bold and earthy with peppery notes. There's a slightly minty flavor from the rosemary and basil. And while there's no lemon in this recipe, it does have a hint of citrus from the thyme and rosemary. It adds a nice savory flavor to whatever you make with it!

Are Greek and Mediterranean seasoning the same?

Greek and Mediterranean seasonings are very similar but they are not exactly the same.
Both use herbs like basil and oregano, as well as garlic and onion powder, however, Greek seasoning usually also includes dried dill and Mediterranean does not.
Sometimes dried red bell peppers are also included in Greek seasoning mixes.

Is Mediterranean seasoning the same as Italian seasoning?

Mediterranean and Italian seasonings both have many of the same components such as basil, oregano, and thyme.
However, the two spice blends are not identical. Italian seasoning often includes marjoram and Mediterranean does not.
It is also similar to Tuscan seasoning, which is a bit more peppery than Italian Seasoning.

    Tip

If you like a finer seasoning mix, pour the mixture into a spice grinder or food processor and pulse.

    🍲 Storage

To Store: Keep your Mediterranean seasoning in an airtight container in a cool dark place out of direct sunlight. Your spice cabinet is a good spot. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)

    How to Use Mediterranean Seasoning

    • Combine this seasoning mix and olive oil to make a quick marinade. (Add some fresh lemon juice or a splash of red wine or white wine for a little acidity.)
    • Make easy and flavorful Instant Pot Chicken and Rice.
    • Add to Greek yogurt or sour cream to make salad dressing or dip.
    • Flavor your favorite tomato sauce with the seasoning mix.
    • Use it with our favorite Mediterranean Chicken Sheet Pan Dinner.
    • Use as a dry rub for chicken, lamb, or beef.
    • Add this spice mixture to your pasta and rice dishes for more flavor.
    • Sprinkle it over Roasted Frozen Cauliflower or other veggie side dishes.

    📖 Variations

The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the seasoning mix has been tested. However, the next time you make our recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

    • Cumin, ground fennel seeds, paprika, turmeric, and mint are all common in Mediterranean and Greek recipes so you may wish to add a little bit of these to your mix.
    • If you are watching your salt, omit it from the mix.

    Mediterranean Butter Sauce

    1. Melt ¼ cup of unsalted butter in a small microwave-safe bowl.
    2. Then, mix it with 2 teaspoons of this seasoning blend.
    3. Add a pinch of minced fresh herbs like parsley, basil, or oregano if desired.

You'll love using this Mediterranean Butter Sauce on pasta, seafood, rice, and grilled meats.
