Whether you're planning to make a batch as gifts or to surprise your kids on family movie night or as a special treat (like a Hot Chocolate Charcuterie Board!) on Christmas Eve, my easy to make Hot Chocolate Bombs will be a huge hit.

Hint: They also make great teacher gifts. Especially if you are the teacher. 😉

What is a Hot Cocoa Bomb?

A hot chocolate bomb is a sphere of chocolate that you can drop into your hot chocolate. It is hollow on the inside and can be filled with mini marshmallows, sprinkles, crushed candy canes or other candies. As the hot cocoa bomb melts, the mini marshmallows and other fillings will pop up into your cocoa. Plus, as the chocolate melts into the hot cocoa, it adds a rich, silky texture that's just divine! It's a totally fun experience for kids and adults, especially during the holiday season.

    Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you'll need for making hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows:

    • chocolate candy melts OR chocolate bar (I love dark chocolate!)
    • mini marshmallows
    • sprinkles
    • crushed peppermint or other small candies

How to Make Hot Chocolate Balls

    1. Melt the chocolates in 30 second intervals according to the directions on the package.
    2. Add a thin layer of chocolate to the mold and let set.
    3. Remove the chocolate from the mold carefully.
    4. Fill one half of the chocolate shell with marshmallows, sprinkles, etc.
    5. In a non stick skillet over low heat, melt the chocolate just enough so that the edge softens. (You can also microwave a ceramic plate and use the hot plate to melt the edge of the chocolate.)
    6. Working quickly, stick the two halves together, pressing gently until the chocolate sets.

    Tips

    • Be sure not to over fill your mold or the two halves won't stick together!
    • Chill your hot chocolate bombs for at least 30 minutes so they stay together.

How to Use Hot Cocoa Bombs

    1. Set the hot chocolate bomb into the bottom of a mug.
    2. Pour 10-12 ounces of warm milk over the top of the bomb.
    3. As the chocolate shell melts, the hot cocoa mix and marshmallows will pop to the surface.
    4. Use a spoon to gently mix everything together and enjoy!

    Recipe Variations

You can use a variety of different chocolate types for making hot cocoa balls. I prefer dark or milk chocolate usually. You can also use flavored candy melts if you like. Almond bark also melts nicely for making these treats!

You can get really creative with what you put inside your bombs, too. In addition to the cocoa powder, add white chocolate chips or even peanut butter chips, peppermint candies, festive sprinkles, etc.

    Instructions

    To Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

    • Melt the chocolate to package instructions.
1 cup plus 1-3 tablespoons of chocolate melting wafers
    • Use the back of a small spatula to spread the melted chocolate all around the silicone cups, focus on the upper edges as the chocolate will slide down a little bit as it hardens.
    • Set the silicone tray on the metal baking sheet and set it into the freezer for about 10 minutes.
    • Spread a second layer of chocolate into the cups, again, focusing on the edges. The chocolate does not need to be really thick, just as even as possible.
    • Return to the freezer on the tray for another 5 minutes.
    • Heat a plate or pan that you can use to melt the edges of the cups.
    • Melt 3 of the 6 edges.
    • Fill add about ½ a tablespoon of cocoa and some marshmallows. Repeat for all three.
2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, About ½ cup of mini marshmallows
    • Melt the edges of the other 3 cups, one at a time. Then one at a time set them onto the filled cups. You may need to rotate the cups a bit to find the closest connection. Repeat with the other two bombs.
    • Store the bombs at room temperature.

    To Make Hot Chocolate

    • Heat your milk to about 140 degrees.
    • Set a hot chocolate bomb into your mug.
    • Pour the hot milk over the top and watch the magic happen.
    • Stir for about 30 seconds to fully incorporate the melting chocolate and cocoa powder.

    Equipment

    • Silicone cup mold
    • Small rubber spatula
    • Small metal baking sheet
    • Optional: food safe glove to prevent fingerprints on the chocolate
    • Dry Measuring Cups
    • Measuring Spoons

    Notes

Be careful not to over fill them or it will be harder to put the two halves together
