This recipe is inspired by Ree Drummond Salisbury Steaks. You may know how much I adore the Pioneer Woman, so when I saw this recipe on her site years ago, I had to try it out.

What kind of meat is Salisbury steak?
Salisbury steak is a combination of juicy ground beef patties smothered in a brown gravy with onions. Some people also add mushrooms. Trust me, these are not like the frozen TV dinners you had as a kid though.
Fun Fact: Dr. James Henry Salisbury invented the salisbury steak during the Civil War, and it is sometimes called the 'poor man's steak.

Ingredients
This is meant to be a brief overview of the salisbury steak recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below.
To make Salisbury steak, you will need the following items:
- lean ground beef
- breadcrumbs
- dry ground mustard
- ketchup
- salt and black pepper
- concentrated beef paste - such as Better than Bouillon
For the gravy, you will also need:
- sweet onion - diced finely
- brown gravy packets, plus water
- ketchup
- Worcestershire sauce

Ang's Tips
- To make uniform patties, I recommend using a large 3-tablespooon cookie scoop. (I use it when I make meatballs, too.) These patties are made with two scoops (or 6 tablespoons).
- Try not to overwork the ground beef because it will become tough.
- These patties can be frozen for later. Place them on a parchment paper lined tray in the freezer for 30 minutes to flash freeze. Then, transfer them to a freezer bag. (Be sure to label). When you're ready to make them, allow them to thaw in the fridge overnight.

We recommend that you try our delicious salisbury steak for the first time just as it is written for the best results because that is we have tested the recipe.
However, the next time you make it, you might consider one of these different ways of making this great recipe.
- For a leaner version, use ground turkey instead of ground beef.
- If you are short on time, you can absolutely use a jar of brown gravy - no shame in taking shortcuts! I recommend, however, you add a little bit of ketchup to give it the classic tangy flavor of Salisbury Steak.
- For an upscale twist, add a dash of Merlot to deglaze the pan after cooking the mushrooms and onions.
