You don’t need a bunch of expensive fresh cheeses to make a melty and delicious chicken meatball. Grab some good quality parmesan cheese and get ready to make our delicious sandwich recipe.

This easy picky-eater-approved sub recipe is perfect for picky eaters or a crazy easy sandwich recipe that can feed the whole family fast!

I'm using my Italian chicken meatball recipe made with ground chicken and bread crumbs. However, you can absolutely use frozen store-bought meatballs.

Ingrdients to make Chicken Meatball Subs on trays.

    🧂 Ingredients

    • store-bought or homemade chicken meatballs
    • sub rolls or hoagie rolls (sometimes also called a French roll)
    • store-bought or homemade tomato sauce
    • shredded parmesan cheese
    • fresh basil (optional)
    • garlic powder and/or Italian seasoning
    • salt and black pepper (optional)

This is meant to be a brief overview of this great recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full recipe with printable card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below or Jump to Recipe.

    🔪 Instructions

If your meatballs are frozen, allow them to thaw before assembling the sandwiches.

    1. Hollow out a little bit of the roll to make more room for the meatballs.
    2. Lightly brush the inside of the rolls with melted butter, sprinkle with garlic powder, and set them on a baking sheet. (optional step)
    3. Toast the rolls at 400F for 5 minutes until lightly golden brown.
    4. Place 3-4 meatballs into the sub roll, depending on the size of your bread.
    5. Top with marinara sauce.
    6. Add shredded cheese on top.
    7. Place the subs under the broiler just until the cheese melts.
    8. Serve immediately.

These chicken parmesan meatball subs are the perfect comfort food meal and always a crowd pleaser!

    🍲 Storage

To Store: Chicken Meatball Subs are really best eaten right when you cook them because the bread can get soggy. However, if you do have leftover subs, you can keep them in the fridge for 1-2 days. (These are my favorite airtight containers.)

To Reheat: Microwave individual portions in 30-second intervals until heated throughout.

    📖 Variations

The first time you try any new recipe we recommend that you make it just as it is written on the recipe card since that is how the recipe has been tested. However, the next time you make our recipe, you might want to try one of these ideas:

Sprinkle some Italian herb seasoning or fresh basil on top before serving.

If you're a cheese-lover like me, you can add provolone cheese or mozzarella cheese on top of the meatballs in addition to the parmesan cheese.

For a low-carb option, try these keto chicken meatballs with your favorite low-carb bread substitute.

Spice-lovers might want to add a little bit of cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or even hot sauce to the tomato sauce.

Buffalo Chicken Meatball Subs: substitute buffalo sauce for tomato sauce and top with a drizzle of blue cheese dressing.
