If you had to choose between a plain old biscuit recipe or one that has been swimming in butter, I think the winner is obvious, don’t you?

These delicious butter swim biscuits are flakey buttermilk biscuits that have been baked in butter to create a crispy layer of butter crust with a soft and fluffy interior. You probably already have most of these ingredients on hand, and it’s the perfect breakfast or brunch recipe that your family will love.

While these amazing biscuits are delicious on their own, you could also pair them with your favorite jelly or jam for additional flavor.

If you love golden brown buttery buttermilk biscuits, this recipe is for you.

Wooden spoon in a mixing bowl full of dry ingredients next to a liquid measuring cup filled with buttermilk.

    🧂 Ingredients

    • Unsalted butter
    • All purpose flour
    • Granulated sugar
    • Baking powder
    • Salt
    • Buttermilk

This is meant to be a brief overview of this simple homemade recipe. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below.

    🔪Instructions

    1. Preheat your oven to 425F.
    2. Place the butter into a 9x9 baking pan and put it into the oven to melt for 4-5 minutes, but be careful not to let it brown.
    3. In a medium bowl, gently whisk together the dry ingredients.
    4. Pour in the buttermilk, and mix with a wooden spoon until thoroughly combined.
    5. Transfer the biscuit batter to the prepared dish with the butter.
    6. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Note: if you prefer, you can use a microwave safe bowl to melt the butter. Grease your baking dish well and then add the dough and pour the melted butter on top.

    ⭐ Tips

✔️If you do not have buttermilk on hand, you can use regular milk (I find whole milk is best) and add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar OR lemon juice for each cup of milk. Allow the milk mixture to sit for 5 minutes before using.

    📖 Variations

We recommend that you try our delicious biscuits for the first time just as it is written for the best results because that is we have tested the recipe.

However, the next time you make it, you might consider one of these different ways of making this great recipe.

    • Substitute flavored butter like Brown Sugar Butter or Garlic Basil Compound Butter to add more flavor to your biscuits.
    • Add fresh or dried herbs, or herb seasoning mix into the biscuit dough.

    ⏲️ Storage

To Store: Cover with plastic wrap or keep in an airtight container. They will keep well in the fridge for up to 1 week.

To Reheat: Wrap individual biscuits in a slightly damp paper towel and microwave for 15-20 seconds.

To Freeze: Allow the baked biscuits to cool completely. Wrap them tightly in aluminum foil, then slide the whole package into a freezer bag. Frozen biscuits are good in the freezer for 2-3 months. Be sure to label the bag!

To Thaw: Remove the biscuits from the freezer and allow them to thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Wonderful easy recipe. I had to cook it about 12 minutes longer than the recipe stated but it came beautiful with a yummy golden crust.
