Summer is a great time to combine your favorite charcuterie boards with the classic summertime cookout staple of delicious burgers. There are charcuterie boards for everything from cocktails to nachos and even pancake boards. Now you can add Burger Boards to your must-try list!

When it comes to a Burger Board, you can think of it as a serve-yourself burger bar, but it’s all on a large cheese board instead of buffet-style like you might be used to. This is a great way to have everything in one place and let everyone customize and create their own great burger creations.

    Our Favorite Burgers

Burgers: Given that this is a burger board, make sure that you have many flavorful burgers for serving! It's hard to choose just one favorite burger recipe, so here are a few of our best burgers:

    • Unbelievable Butter Burger
    • Cheese Stuffed Beef Burger
    • Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders
    • Spicy Cowboy Burger with Bacon (pictured below)

While we have only ground beef burgers on our board, you can customize your board to include pork, lamb, chicken, veggie, or even vegan burgers!

Incredible Cowboy Burger piled high with bacon and crispy onion rings on a sesame seed bun on a slate and wood cutting board. Slices of tomatoes and onion rings can be seen to the left.

Buns: You can have regular buns or add a variety of different rolls to create various creations! I recommend using brioche, sesame, everything, or even sourdough. Personally, I like toasting the burger buns - or slathering them with Cowboy Butter and grilling them - before serving.

    Burger Toppings

Toppings: Start with the classics such as lettuce, tomato, and slices of red onions, but you can do as many toppings as you’d like! Bacon, grilled onions, pickles, and whatever else you like all make great additions. Sometimes I like to add jalapeños and Pico de Gallo or salsa for a spicy Tex-Mex flavor!

Cheese: You can create a small cheese platter or stick with two or three kinds of cheese. I love classic cheddar and Colby or Monterrey Jack cheeses on my burgers.

    BBQ Sauce and Condiments

Condiments: You can’t go wrong with BBQ sauce, mayo, mustard, or even ketchup on your burger! You can also make a fun Homemade Burger Sauce to elevate your guest’s burger experience. Use ceramic condiment holders, small ramekins, or mini mason jars for each of your favorite sauces and condiments.

Here are a few of my favorite homemade sauces:

    • Cherry BBQ Sauce
    • Lime Mayonnaise
    • Spicy Ketchup Recipe
    • Pineapple Bourbon BBQ Sauce
    • Strawberry Peach BBQ Sauce
    • Sweet & Spicy Barbecue Sauce

    Additional Snacks

Piling on some extra snacks that go great with burgers helps to fill up any holes you might have and also gives people other things to munch on. Watermelon slices, French fries, or chips all complement a good burger!

    🔪Instructions

This is meant to be a brief overview of how to build your own burger board. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable recipe card with ingredients, please scroll down to the teal box below or Jump to Recipe.

The key is to arrange all the ingredients so everyone can easily grab what they want for their own perfect burger. The best part is that once you have it set up, your work is done!

    1. Start with a big board, using one with edges is easiest.
    2. Place burgers on first - a small cake stand is perfect for giving some height (it also allows you to add more items on the board itself).
    3. Place bowls with condiments.
    4. Then fill with the largest items in first like the buns, red onions, tomatoes, and watermelon, or other items to nibble on.
    5. Then add the next largest items like the cheese, bacon, and larger pickles.
    6. Add another section of medium size items like lettuce.
    7. Fill holes with the smallest items like cherries, pickles, and jalapeño slices.

    ⭐ Tips

✔️If you don't have one board that's big enough, or if there are food allergies to consider, you can always use a second board.

✔️Be sure to add tongs, small spoons, and/or forks for serving.

✔️When adding items like the cheese that won’t lay easily, put a couple of small bowls under it to stabilize it.

    💭 Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions (and answers!) readers often ask about making burgers.

How many burgers do I need for 6 people?

This depends largely on how large your burger patties are, but you can roughly figure on 1.5 burgers per person. If you plan on making 6oz. patties, you will need about 2lbs of beef for 6 people.

What temperature should burgers be cooked to?

Ground beef should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 160-degrees F according to FoodSafety.gov.

What is the best cheese to put on a burger?

If you like really good melted cheese on your burger, chances are you'll love cheddar, swiss, or Monterrey Jack. Other great choices are provolone, pepper jack, and American. However, cheddar is the most common.

What kind of tomatoes are best for burgers?

Large, somewhat firm tomatoes like beefsteak and Brandywine are delicious on burgers. Some heirloom varieties are also good on burgers.

How do you make raw onions for burgers?

Using a sharp knife, cut off the top and bottom of the onion. Then, carefully cut thin slices. Pull the rings apart and use the larger rings for burgers. The smaller pieces can be sautéed in a pan.

    🍴 Serving Suggestions

There's obviously plenty of food here, but if you want to round out your burger menu a little bit add a couple of side dishes. Loaded Potato Salad and Honey Lime Fruit Salad can both be made ahead of time and chilled in the fridge until it's time to eat. Of course, Grilled Corn on the Cob is always a big hit too, and it's pretty easy to make. Serve it up with some Cowboy Butter on the side.
