Hello Juggling Act readers, I'm Heather from Krafts and Kiddos sharing another fun activity this month for the kids. With autumn almost here, I'm getting a head start on some sweet fall crafts.

Today I'm excited to be sharing an Apple Pie Scented Play Dough recipe. It's easy to make and it smells oh-so savory, it's guaranteed everyone will enjoy it.

Our easy to make Apple Pie Scented Play Dough is the perfect activity for the fall season. We love play dough recipes, and this wonderfully scented play dough has become one of our favorites to create and play with. This is the perfect activity for kids of all ages to enjoy, create, and explore using their senses.

    Materials

    Here's what you need:

    • Flour
    • Salt
    • Cream of Tartar
    • Apple Pie Spice
    • Ground Cinnamon
    • Vegetable Oil
    • Water
    • Red Food Coloring
    • Green Food Coloring

    Instructions

    1. Place a large pot on the stove and mix all the dry ingredients together.
    2. Now add in your vegetable oil, water, and food coloring, start stirring. If you want a really deep color, add at least 1Tsp of food coloring. If you don't see a dark enough color, just keep adding drops until you achieve the perfect shade.
    3. Continue stirring your ingredients over low/medium heat until the dough begins to pull away from the pot and also begins to stick together. I'd say it's close to 5 minutes of stirring.
    4. Once you reach the right consistency, turn off the heat, place your dough onto wax paper or a cookie sheet, and let cool for a few minutes, then knead.
    5. If the play dough is too sticky after it cools, just add a little bit of flour and knead a little longer. This will help the consistency and make a less sticky dough.

    Play Dough Activities

We made 2 different batches. The first was using green food coloring to create green apples. The next batch we made we used the red food coloring to create our dramatic red apple color.

Now, let the kids begin creating and playing with this wonderful smelling play dough. We used apple cookie cutters to create our apple shapes. Can you smell the apple pie aroma?

Even though this recipe smells just like apple pie, I wouldn't recommend eating it. There's nothing toxic involved, but this recipe includes lots of salt. Luckily, if a small child does try to nibble on this, it won't hurt - they may just make a sour face for a second or two.

My son enjoyed every moment of playing with his play dough, creating, playing, and enjoyed the amazing scent too! We have an apple tree in our backyard so I added some fresh apples to the table in hopes he may try and re-create the shape of any apple. Just another added activity you could try with your play dough.

This apple pie scented play dough is a wonderful activity throughout autumn and into winter. By adding some food coloring you can create some very striking play dough colors for both fall and winter holidays.

Since we created two batches of this super fun play dough - it was great to have green and red to create different apples, because of course apples grow in both colors. We used cookie cutters shaped like apples to really get into the season and theme.

Besides the wonderful smell of this apple pie scent, I love that you can store your dough inside an air tight container, and place into your refrigerator for ongoing play-time.  Actually, once the play dough has been stored inside the cooler temperature of the fridge, the apple pie scent seems to be stronger and simply smells ah-mazing!

Oh the fun your little ones will have playing with this easy to make play dough recipe.

    Variation

Use red and yellow food coloring to make orange, and substitute the apple pie spice for pumpkin pie spice!
